Day In the Life

  • Curriculum is competency and project based - which means no test, no grades, and no classes.
  • Learn and grow by completing projects that represent a different skill to “master.”
  • Regardless of the major, all projects are skills-based, generalizable, and can be applied to a number of career paths.
  • Many projects are scenario-based and require submission of a deliverable which can range from powerpoint slides, briefs, or traditional research papers.
  • If you submit a project and don’t master it on the first try, you’ll be able to use the feedback your professor sends to you to resubmit the project as many times as you need.

Highs & Lows

  • Hardest part: balancing school with external stressors like job stress and financial obligations. Your Rivet School coach can really help manage these challenges and stay on track.
  • Most fun: There are no tests, no grades, and no classes. Students enjoy the program’s flexibility and project-based learning model, which lets them study at their own pace while juggling other responsibilities like work or parenting.

From Rivet School General Core Program Staff

  • "We focus on a growth mindset, vs. having a pass/fail mentality."
  • "We recommend students have at least 7 hours a week to dedicate to their studies. Just like any student, juggling other life responsibilities can get in the way of completing the program. To prepare for moments when life happens, students should plan for job-related stress, financial obligations, and mental health concerns by setting realistic work schedules, budgeting effectively, and seeking support when needed."
  • "Each student gets a personal coach to help them reach graduation. Coaches provide a personalized support with things like academics, resources, and motivation. The most successful students are those who meet with their coach at least once a week to check-in and set goals to stay on track. Using program resources like tutoring and staying engaged with all available support also makes a big difference."
  • "If you are looking for a flexible, low-cost online program that emphasizes hands-on projects over exams, supports working while studying, and offers personalized 1:1 coaching, then this program is right for you."
  • "We accept undocumented and international students (details here). Students do not need any work authorization for U.S. residency/citizenship to enroll at Rivet."
