Military Overview
The U.S. Military consists of six service branches: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. There are full-time or part-time options that allow you to attend college or have a job while serving in the Military. Both options offer money to help pay for college. Part-time options include: 1) Reserves who are available for active-duty deployment in times of war or national emergency. 2) National Guard focuses on homeland security and humanitarian relief. The military can be a good entry point for those interested in National Security and Defense, Aviation or Aerospace, Engineering, Emergency Response, Medical and Dentistry, and Logistics and Supply Chain Management. However, jobs in the military can lead to civilian careers in all industries. The length of military service can vary greatly person to person from as short as 5 years to an entire career. The military requires in person presence for training, deployment, and other standard duties. Therefore, it typically requires relocating to another city or country, and living on a military base or in military housing. Learning is often conducted through training exercises in practical and hands on environments and requires physical fitness. Government programs and many organizations provide transition assistance and employment resources to people returning to civilian life.

The process of enlisting can begin anytime throughout the year. Most military positions have age, citizenship, education, physical and medical fitness requirements. Having a criminal record or health condition may be disqualifying for military service. However, this can be a case by case decision and recruiters can provide insight on your situation. To enlist, applicants will speak with a recruiter, pass the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Test, complete and pass a physical examination, and pass a background check. Additional requirements may be required depending on the military branch or position.
